March 19, 2012 - 9:00am - 1:00pm

The goal of the meeting is to create interest-alike "pods of professionals" who are all engaged in similar educational initiatives in their schools and are looking to brainstorm and problem-solve with colleagues.

This meeting will be structured so that each of you has the opportunity to choose an area of interest for professional development. We have narrowed down the choices to three topics based on information gleaned from ongoing work with you.

From Phonics to Fluency to Proficient Reading: Helping All Students Achieve Competence in Two Key Areas of the Reading Curriculum (K-6)

Featuring
Timothy Rasinski, Ph.D.
Professor of Literacy Education, Kent State University

Panel of Respondents include:
Dr. Jed P. Luchow, Panel Moderator, Director of Project SIR: Success In Reading
Dr. Joanna Uhry, Fordham University, Director of the Ennis William Cosby Certificate Program in Reading
Dr. Eileen Marzola, Past President, New York Branch – International Dyslexia Association

Word decoding and meaning (phonics and vocabulary) and fluency in reading have been found to be key elements of any successful reading program (National Reading Panel, 2000). Despite their importance many students fail to achieve sufficiently in these areas and many teachers do not feel completely confident in their knowledge and teaching of these reading components. This workshop will provide theoretical and research background and definition to phonics and fluency. The workshop will share approaches to assessing and monitoring progress in these key aspects of reading. Finally, the workshop will share effective and engaging strategies for teaching these all-important reading components that will move students toward better comprehension and greater proficiency in reading.
